Notes for FRANCIS COOKE:
He (Francis Cooke)was a student of St. John's College in 1592.(Cambridge Archives)
He was the grandson of Sir Anthony Cooke,a stout protestant ,who had fled England in Bloody Mary's time.
Francis Cooke was of Bawtry Parish of Blyth,Yorkshire,England. His father and grandfather were said to be silk mercers. The parish records of Blyth attest to the manorial rights of the family and to their ownership of the convent of Blyth as early as 1540.He was born into a Roman Catholic family.
Francis Cooke was won over to the Sepratist movement by the strong pressure of religious conviction which spread along the line of the great northern road leading from London to Scotland. He was one of the "exiles from Scrooby' who went to Leyden,Holland and became a wool comer make a living.
Francis Cooke married Hester Mahieu at Leiden 30 June 1603,the records there describing him as a woolcomer, unmarried, from England (MD 8:4).thus he was in Holland before the arrival of the Clyfton/Robinson separatists. He was probably born no earlier than 1583,for he must have been under 60 in 1643 when he was on the ATBA for Plymouth and yet not much after 1583 if he married in 1603.He appears frequently in Plymouth records on grand and trail juries,as a surveyer of the highways,on various ad hoc committees, and in a number of land transactions. He came to Plymouth with his son,John, afterward known as Rev. John Cooke on the "Mayflower" in 1620. Francis' wife,Hester and their daughter Jane and son Jacob arrived on the "Anne" in 1623.Two more children ,Hester and Mary, were born at Plymouth.Jane married Experience Mitchell,Hester married Richard Wright, and Mary married John Tomson (Tompson or Thompson). Francis' son Jacob married Demaris Hopkins, daughter of Stephen Hopkins.
Francis Cooke was one of the signers of the Mayflower Compact. He was made freeman in 1663. In 1634,he was a referee in a settlement of various affairs for the colony. Until 1640 his name appears constantly in some capacity performing important duties for the government. He died in 7 April 1663,aged about 86 years. He is spoken of in the death records as "Francis Cooke The Ancestor". Bradford, the Pilgrim historian states that"he lived to see his children's children have children'unusual at that time).Hester, his wife in known to have survived him for a number of years.

Notes for HESTER MAHIEW:
She was the famous French woman who married Francis Cooke and I believe the basis of the boast of Elihu Bancroft that because of his daughter's marriage to Moses Taber,he was of French Ancestry and Mayflower Origin.
See Bancroft or Van Vleet
Hester (Mahiew) Cooke came on the ship named the "Anne". Hester was an old friend of Priscilla Alden, from Leyden.Hester also made the acquaintance of Elizabeth Howland while on the sea voyage. She got on very well even though she was not of English birth.Francis Cooke had a comfortable house awaiting his wife and children when they arrived in America and Hester naturally quite fitted in with the new comers to the new land.
The Walloons were a religious sect, each country gave them a different name. They denominated themselves as Gaulois,The Dutch placed them as Wallecke, and the English, from their locating on the river wall in Holland, called them the Walloons. The religious sect was located primarily in Belgium.
Descendants of Hester Mahieu are eligible for membership in the Huegenot Society.

Notes for MARVIN HILLMAN:
He was a gasoline salesman and worked for Flying Red Horse. He had a great personality and was
about the best salesman that ever was.

My Uncle Baldy was one of the neatest people that there ever was to a ten year old boy. He was a salesman that could sell iceboxes to Eskimos. He worked for the Mobil Oil Company and he was a source of toy, red, oil trucks --,still have mine , and lots of little red plastic flying red horses.I still have one of his signs that I use to pick up leaves with- it is in my shed and when fall comes I will probably use it again.Once in a while I see a flying red horse among my things and I think of him .
He had the greatest collection of comic books that I ever saw.He could tell a ten year old boy anything and he would do it---- little things like spitting on my hook before I put it in the water-so the fish could taste it.
One day he was sitting in the back seat of his station wagon and his wife ,Thelma , was driving. He told her that he was very cold and she ignored him and he built a fire in the back of the station wagon to warm himself up.To a ten year old boy he was the pied piper.
