Subject 310, P1 (302) CHRISTOPHER HAWKHURST The following is from the New York Genealogical & Biological Record, Vols 32 and 33, which gives the Hawkhurst descendants for many generations: from "The Genealogy of Francis Weekes", by Dr. Frank Edgar Weeks, Kipton, Ohio, 1938: and from "The Dodge Genealogy", by Theron Royal Woodward, 1904. The name is spelled in many different ways, such as Hawxhurst, Harkhurst, Hawksworthe, etc: I have adopted the spelling of many of the present family. Christopher Hawkhurst's birth and death dates are not known. He came to New England in 1630, with his sister Mary, wife of Robert Coles, subject 618, and landed at Salem, Mass.; he then moved to Ipswich, Mass. In 1653 he was at Warwick, L.I., and in 1653 went to Oyster Bay, L.I,, when he sold his home in Pawtucket, R.I., and bought a lot at Matinecock, L.I. He was on Long Island at the time of the settlement of the estate of his father in law Henry Ruddock in 1674. He bought some land from the Indians in 1682, He married in 1655, Mary Ruddick, daughter of Henry and Mabel (Burrowes) Ruddick of Rhode Island and Long Island, See subject 622. Issue :- 1/1. William Hawkhurst. He was married, name of wife unknown. Issue:- 2/1. Sarah Hawkhurst, She married at St. Georges Church, Hempstead, on January 13/1726, Tristram Dodge of Oyster Bay, born 1697, died 1785, son as Tristram and Dorcas Dodge. Issue:- 3/1. Stephen Dodge. On October 7/1783 he fled to Nova Scotia as he was a United Empire Loyalist during the Revolution. 3/2. Daniel Dodge. 3/3. Freelove Dodge. She married Townsend Parish, son of Dr. Matthew and Zeruiah (Townsend) Parish, see subject 616, page 3. 3/4. Anne Dodge. 3/5. Sarah Dodge. 1/2. Mary Hawkhurst. Born about 1660. She married, 1st, on November 17/1684, George Townsend, born at Oyster Bay about 1661, died 1697 of smallpox, son of John and Elizabeth (Coles) Montgomery Townsend, see subject 308 page 8. After George's death, Mary married, 2nd, in 1697, Abraham Alling, who died in 1732, by whom she had Penelope Alling who married Peter Underhill, son of David and --- (Wright) Underhill and had six children: Freelove Alling who married Thomas Underhill, son of Abraham and Sarah (Townsend) Underhill see subject 308, page 6 about her. See subject 154 for issue and further particulars. 1/3. Jane Hawkhurst. She married Jarvis Mudge, whose will was dated February 1/1734, proved May 2/1735, son of Moses Mudge of Hempstead. L.I. Issue: - 2/1. Jarvis Mudge. He died intestate and letters of administration were granted on May 28/1741 to Samson Crocker of Oyster Bay his cousin. 2/2. Elizabeth Mudge, She married John Dusenbury, son of Johannes and Mary (or Susannah) Dusenbury. 3/1. Moses Dusenbury. 3/2. Jarvis Dusenbury. He married on May 29/1736, Elizabeth Denton. 2/3. Mary Mudge, born 1701. She married on January 13/1727, Waite Powell, born September 29/1698, died 1782, son of Thomas and Mary (Willets) Powell, and had seven children. Subject 310. P2 (303) 2/4. He married, 1st, Elizabeth Titus, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Gorman) Titus: 2nd, Margaret Losee. 2/4. Sarah Crooker. 2/5. Benjamin Crooker. He married Ann ---. 2/6. Abigail Crooker, born 1703, died November 4/1765. She married in 1728, Daniel Underhill, born at Cedar Swamp in 1700, died May 29/1790, son of John and Elizabeth (Willets) Underhill, and they had five children. After Abigail's death, Daniel married, 2nd, Rosannah (Townsend) Cock, widow of Hezekiah Cock, see subject 154, page 1. 1/5. Samson Hawkhurst. Born 1671, died January 25/1733 at Cedar Swamp, L.I., to which place he had moved in 1713. He married on January 18/1698, Hannah Townsend, born 1680, died January 11/1757, daughter of John and Hannah (---) Townsend. and widow of a Mr. Forman, see subject 308, p 4, As a wedding present, her father gave Hannah 180 acres of land at Cedar Swamp. Issue:- 2/1.Johanna Hawkhurst, born 1699, died April 14/1758. She married on January 29/1727, Daniel Birdsall, who died between 1736 and 1744, son of Samuel and Mary (Pratt) Birdsall. Issue:- 3/1. Sarah Birdsall, born about 1728. She married Henry Titus, born 1722, died 1749, son of John and Sarah (Pearsall) Titus. 3/2. Mary Birdsall, born about 1730. 3/3. Hannah Birdsall, born about 1732. 3/4. Any Birdsall, born about 1734. 3/5. Daniel Birdsall, born about 1735. He married Hannah Mandeville. 2/2. Sarah Hawkhurst, born March 28/1702, died April 11/1728. 2/3. William Hawkhurst, born 1703-4, died October 26/1790. He married on April 5/1736. Anne Pratt, daughter of Ebenezer and Mehitable (Mudge) Pratt, and had three children. 2/4. Samson Hawkhurst, died between May 14 and August 9/1790. He married, 1st, on May 1/1733, Amy Wright, daughter of Dennis and Susannah Wright: he married, 2nd, on August 26/1739, Jerusha Smith. He had two children by his first wife and eight by his second. 2/5. Joseph Hawkhurst, will dated October 23/1797, proved February 3/1801. His first two wives names are not known: he married, 3rd, Sarah Mott. His will mentioned wife Sarah and children Hannah, Sarah, Elizabeth Merritt, Jacob, Jesse and William. 2/6. Amy Hawkhurst. 2/7. Benjamin Hawkhurst, born 1720. He married in 1746, Hannah Pearsall, born October 17/1721, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Underhill) Pearsall, and had six children. 2/8.Daniel Hawkhurst, born October 13/1725, died March 25/1770, of smallpox. He married in December 1745, Sarah Seaman, daughter of Thomas and Phoebe (Titus) Seaman and had six children.
