The following is from "The Cory-Sherman Families", consisting of clippings from the Boston Transcript; from "The Genealogy of the Cory Family", by Mrs Hildenbrand, New York, 1938; from "The Manchester Family of Rhode Island", by Alden C. and Rita C. Manchester, an the New England Historical & Genealogical Society's Registers, vols 101 and 102, of October 1947 and January 1948: and from "The Descendants of Thomas, son of Philip Taber", by George L. Randall, 1924. William Cory was probably born in Devonshire, England, between 1615 and 1620, and died at Portsmouth, R.I., January 4/1682. He was possibly a resident of Portsmouth when the town was organized in 1639, and was known to have been there in 1642: he resided there until his death. He was a house carpenter and a miller. On December 10/1657 he was given a grant of 8 acres of land; freeman in 1658: Deputy from 1678 to 1680: he was a Lieutenant and a Captain in the Militia. He married about 1653, Mary Earle, who died on March 22/1718, daughter of Ralph and Joan (Savage) Earle of Portsmouth, R.I. After his death, Mary married, 2nd, Joseph Timberlake, son of Henry and Mary Timberlake, by whom she had one child. Issue:- 1. John Cory. Baptized 1655, died May 12/1712. He married in 1679, Elizabeth ---, who died in 1735. Tradition says she was an Indian Princess named Minnetinka, named Elizabeth after her marriage. They resided in Portsmouth until 1707 and then removed to Kingston, R.I. They had seven children, 2. William Cory. Baptized 1659. He married Martha Cook, daughter of John and Mary (Borden) Cook, see subject 694. Both died in 1704. They had eight children. 3. Thomas Cory. Baptized 1661, died 1738. He married, 1st, (according to Randall's genealogy of the Tabers), Sarah Taber, born about 1671, daughter of Philip and Mary (Cooke) Taber, subject 336. He married, 2nd, on February 24/1732, Susanna Manchester, born between 1686 and 1693, died 1774, daughter of William and Mary (Cook) Manchester, and widow of John Taber, born July 18/1684, died before October 11/1728, by whom she had eight children: no children recorded of this second marriage. See subject 166 for issue and further particulars. 4. Caleb Cory. Died 1704. He married Sarah --- and had three children. They lived at Dartmouth, Mass. 5. Roger Cory. Baptized 1665, died 1754. He married, 1st, in 1696, wife's name unknown, and had eleven children. He married, 2nd, on May 1/1718, at Little Compton, R.I., Remembrance Dye, widow at John Dye: no children by her. 6. Mercy Cory. She married, 1st, Cornelius Jones: 2nd, on November 17/1704, Charles Gonsales and had one son by him. 7. Ann Cory, She married Robert Bennett, born March 1650, died 1722 at Newport, R.I. and had nine children. 8. Mary Cory. She married Thomas Cook, brother of the wife of his elder brother William, see subject 594. They had six children. 9. Joan Cory. She married Mr Taylor and had ten children. 10. Margaret Cory, Died young.
