Subject 344 (321) ROBERT DENNIS The following is taken from the "Genealogy of Ten Generations of the Briggs family", by Pearl Leona Heck, and from "Jesse Dennis of Sussex County, N.J. and his descendants", by Charles E. Stickney, both on file at the New England Historical & Genealogical Society of Boston. Robert Dennis was born at Portsmouth, R.I. in 1645 and died there June 5/1691. He purchased land there on August 25/1656 and was made freeman in 1671, Deputy in 1673-84. On July 9/1672 he deeded land to the Friends Society for a Quaker Burial Ground. On May 25/1691, he purchased land at Monmouth, New Jersey. He married on November 16/1672, Sarah Howland, born 1645, died at Duxbury, Mass, on October 2/1712, a descendant of Henry Howland, brother of John Howland who came on the Mayflower, see subject 690. They were Quakers. Issue:- l. Mary Dennis. born 1673. She married George Lawton, son of John and Mary (Bonner) Lawton. 2. Robert Dennis. born November 6/1677 at Portsmouth, died January 5/1730. He married on January 22 or November 6/1700, Susanna Briggs, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Cooke) Briggs of Portsmouth. See subject 172 for issue and further particulars. 3. Sarah Dennis. Born 1679, died 1712. She married Thomas Fish who died 1712. 4. John Dennis. born August 15/l682, died August 4/1732. He married Ann Brayton, born July 6/1683, died August 28/1747, daughter of Stephen and Ann (Tallman) Brayton. He had a son John who married Lydia Lawton, daughter of John and Abigail Lawton of Portsmouth, R.I. 5. Joseph Dennis, Born May 25/1689, died October 24/1759. He married on April 20/1721, Sarah Durfee, born March 1/1693, died April 21/1759, daughter of Thomas and Ann (Freeborn) Durfee. They had 8 children.
