Subject 534. 4/22/53 P1 (334) ELIAS DOUGHTY The following is from "The Doughty Family of Long Island", by Ethan Allen Doty, in the Yew York Genealogical & Biographical Record, vol 43, page 273, which assembles and corrects many previous genealogies of the Doughty family by Savage, Bunker, John Henry Jones, &c., and which carries their descendants down much further then I have copied below. Elias Doughty was born in England about 1632, and died probably in 1690, son of Francis and Bridget (--) Doughty, see subject 1068. Elias first appeared on the records of Flushing, L.I,, in 1666. On July 28/1673, an order was issued to Lieutenant Willet and Cornet Doughty, to send out scouts, and the next day a letter was received from Captain Manning, thanking Cornet Doughty for his activity. The same day a letter was received from Cornet Doughty respecting his endeavours to raise men. Order of the Court of Assizes, dated October 4/ 1678, reads:. "Hempstead men to be told that whatsoever act by way of combination, will run themselves into a premunire (sic) and that if Mr. Cornell and Mr. Doughty and others, will not immediately settle on Long Island, there are them that will". On March 21/1679, Elias Doughty of Flushing wrote to Secretary Nicholls, requesting a grant at Bomana Neck, near Cow Bay. On April 20/1680, the town of Flushing granted Elias 200 acres of land. On October 20/1685, Elias Doughty, Thomas Hicks and others, were Justices of the Peace. Sarah Doughty was a member of the Society of Friends. Elias Doughty was a prominent, prosperous and highly respected resident of Flushing, and possessed considerable property there. While there is no record of the birth of his children, they were probably born in the order given below. He married at Flushing, about 1658-60, Sarah ---, who died in 1726. Issue:- (all born in Flushing) 1. Mary Doughty. Born about 1658. She married at Flushing on July 6/1676-7, Thomas Hick, born at Hempstead in 1640, died in 1740, over 100 years old, son of John and his first wife Horod (Long) Hicks, see Subject 266 for their issue and further particulars. 2. Francis Doughty. Born about 1661, died December 21/1741. He married in 1686, Mary Palmer, eldest daughter of John and Bridget Palmer of Westchester County, N.Y., who lived on a tract of land there stretch- ing from Frog's Neck to the Sound and to the Bronx River. In 1685 Francis was a Cornet in Captain Willet's troup of horse. He was noted for having swum from Flushing to New York City. Issue:. 2/1 Elias Doughty, born April 5/1687, probably died young, 2/2. Palmer Doughty, born July 2 /1689. In 1715 he removed to Rye, N.Y. where he was an ensign in the militia in 1722. He married Sarah ---, and returned to Flushing. 2/3. Francis Doughty, born December 20/1691, died between May 6/l756 and March 12/1761. He lived in Rye: name of wife unknown. Issue:- 3/1. John Doughty, born 1716, died May 13 or June 18/1789. He had seven children: name of wife unknown, 3/2. Elizabeth Doughty, born 1720. She married Jonathan Miller. 2/4. Charity Doughty, born December 14/1693. She married at Flushing in 1718, John Embree, born 1697, died 1769, son of Robert Embree, There is some doubt that the John Embree she married was the one born 1697, died 1769. The St. Nicholas Society records and the Winthrop-Babcock genealogy by Josephine C. Frost, state that John Embree, born 1697, died 1769, married Sarah Doughty, born about 1680, youngest child of Elias and Sarah Doughty, see page 4: I think Subject 534. P2 (335) Ethan Allen Doty's genealogy is the more correct. Further, the St. Nicholas records and the Frost genealogy says the Sarah Doughty who married John Embree, was born in 1703: Doty says this Sarah died unmarried and was the daughter of Francis and Mary (Palmer) Doughty, and the sister of Charity, see below.
