Note: The following is a section of a family history compiled by Herbert Armstrong Poole between 1905 & 1960, transcribed by AAA Maitland 1998. Subject numbers are HAP's originals. HAP's page divisions are shown: after subject page numbers are complete document page numbers in brackets and issue dates. The original text had generations indented in turn: here, generation numbers are added to each individual: the children of the title subject are "1/--". Subject 536. R. 2/2/51 (338) JOHN CARMAN. Handwritten note: son of John Carman subject 1072 Up to 1946 the Carman Genealogies were as follows:- Bunker's Long Island Genealogies. The Dorland Family in America by John Dorland Cramer, Washington, 1898 The Jones Family of Long Island, by John Henry Jones, New York, 1907, Genealogy of Long Island Families, by Charles J. Werner, 1919. Carman Genealogy by William Stillwell Carman, 6 vole, manuscript, the only copy extant being at the New York Public Library. In 1946, Henry Alanson Tredwell of Brooklyn, reviewed all the above, and in his "Genealogy of John Carman", gave his corrections and additions, which very considerably from the earlier works, from which I have taken the following. John Carman was born at Roxbury, Mass., on July 8/1632-3, and died at Hempstead, L.I., in 1684. He was brought by his father to Hempstead in 1643, together with the Reverend Robert Fordham and a number of Stamford, Conn., men, details of which I have given under subject 264. He was a miller, a saw mill operator, and probably a farmer. His mill stood on the west side of Hicks' Neck. He was a townsman of Hempstead in 1663. Hempstead Town Records about him are as follows:- Vol 1, p 312, confirms his age by stating that on July 12/l167 he was about 44 years of age. On June 11/1657 he owned six cattle and 32 acres of meadow land, allotted to the first settlers. On May 29/1659 the town granted him half an acre of land adjoining the north side of his land for building a barn on it. On October 19/1659, he took up 50 acres of land and sold it to William Smith. On January 16/1663, he was chosen town representative. On May 19/1665 he was one of several men in the town appointed to keep one bull each for town use, for which he was paid 20 shillings per year. His name appears in many records as owning cattle and horses and sharing in allotments of land. On May 5/1682, he was given by the town a small piece of land on the west side of his deceased father's field, and adjoining to the south end of his own lot, containing one acre or thereabouts. On May 4/1682 he gave 10 shillings to the ministry of Jeremy Hubbard for the year, and his father gave œ2. He married, about 1655, Hannah --,- born about 1636, died between 1674 and 1684, probably of a Hempstead family. His wife was not Hannah Seaman, daughter of Captain John Seaman, as stated in the Seaman and other genealogies, because John Carman's will of 1684 mentioned no wife, while Captain John Seaman's will of 1694, mentioned his daughter Hannah Carman, who most probably married Caleb Carman, son of John Carman. John Carman's will of 1684, probated the same year, mentioned his daughter Abigail, sons John, Caleb, Benjamin, Joshua and Joseph, who were then minors who were to have his grinding and sawing mills upon their majority, the mills meanwhile to be run by sons John and Caleb. It also mentioned sons Samuel and Thomas who were to have the meadow next to the lot formerly Jackson's. Overseers were Samuel Emery (Embree) and John Pine. Issue:. 1. John Carman Born about 1656, still living in 1720 and possibly 1725. In 1717 he was a saddler and probably a farmer. He was captain in the local militia in 1698. In 1685 he owned 180 acres of land in Hempstead. In 1698 he deeded to the heirs of his brother Benjamin, all that he had been left in his father John's will, the parcel of land at the south excepted. He is said to have married Miriam ---, daughter of Simon and Mary Cooper, but as this Miriam was born in 1669, it may have been another Miriam born about 1660, because their first child was born in 1678-9. The names of his children were taken from the Census of 1698. Subject 536. P2 2/2/51 (339) See the arguments about their births in Tredwell's genealogy, Issue:- 2/1. Elizabeth Carman, born 1679. 2/2.
