The following is from "The Hoyt Genealogy", by David T, Hoyt, 1871: from "The Lyon Memorial"; from Huntington's History of Stamford, 1868: from "The Bates, Selleck and Allied Families", by Henry S. Gorham, Noroton, Conn., 1938: and from "The Ancestors & Descendants of Henry Gregory", by Grant Gregory, Provincetown, Mass., 1938. Simon Hoyt was born in Dorsetshire, England, on January 20 1590, and died at Stamford, Conn., September 1/1657, son of John and Ruth Hoyt of Dorsetshire, England, who never came to America. The name is spelled in many different ways, such as Hoyte, Hait, Haight, Hoit and Hoyette. Simon Hoyt, with his brother in law Nicholas Stowers and the Spragues, who were also from Upway, came to America in the ship "Abigail", with Governor Endicott, and landed at Salem, Mass., on September 6/1628. He settled first at Charlestown, Mass., in 1629, and in 1630 removed to Dorchester, Mass., with the first settlers. On October 8/1633 he was appointed fence viewer and again on June 2/1634. In 1635 he removed to Scituate, Mass., and joined the church there. He then moved to Windsor, Conn., in 1635, and to Fairfield in 1649, and Stanford in 1655. The inventory of his estate, dated October 9/1657, amounted to œ239.0.0, He married, 1st, at Upway, England, on December 2/1612, Deborah Stowers, daughter of Walter Stowers, born at Dorchester, England May 1/1593. He married, 2nd, at Scituate, Mass,, in 1635, Susannah Smith, who died February 1/1674 at Stamford. After Simon's death, Susanna married, 2nd, as his second wife, Robert Bates of Stamford, who died January 11/1675, and had another family by him. Robert Bates came from England with one of Governor Saltonstall's colonies in 1630 to Watertown and then Wethersfield; Robert Bates' first wife who he married on June 26/1657, was Margaret ---, widow of William Cross. Issue:- (by his first wife Deborah Stowers) 1. John Hoyt. Born in England, March 12/1614, died at Rye, N.Y., in September 1684. He married Mary, widow of Francis Purdy of Fairfield, Conn., and settled in Rye, N.Y. They had four children. 2. Walter Hoyt. Born in England, June 9/1616, died at Windsor, Conn., in 1695-6. The Gregory genealogy says his wife's name was Elizabeth. Issue:- 2/1. John Hoyt, born at Windsor, July 13/1644, died about 1711. He married, 1st, on September 14/1666, Mary Lindall, daughter of Henry Lindall, a deacon of the church at New Haven: 2nd, Hannah ----. He lived in Norwalk and in Danbury, Conn, 2/2. Elizabeth Hoyt, born 1686 (copied from original should be 1646?) She married in September 1663, Samuel St. John of Norwalk, Conn., born 1637-40, died January 14/1685. They had three children. 2/3. Hannah Hoyt, born 1648. She married on October 20/1664, Judah Gregory of Norwalk, born 1643-40, died 1733, and had seven children. He founded Danbury, Conn. 2/4. Zerubbabel Hoyt, a deacon, born probably in 1650-4, died 1727- 38. He lived at Norwalk, Conn. His first wife's name is unknown: he had Abigail, Joseph, Daniel, Hannah, Caleb and Rhoda, He married, 2nd, probably before 1725, Mehitabel, widow of John Keeler. She was mother in law to his son Caleb by his first wife. In December 1600 he was engaged to beat the drum on all public occasions and to sweep the meeting house for which he was paid 42 shillings for his labor. His estate was inventoried at œ342.O,O, 5. Thomas Hoyt, Born in England, September 20/1618, died December 9/1656. Subject 600. P2 (347) 4/22/53 4. Deborah Hoyt. Born August 9/1620 in England, died June 3/1628. 5. Nicholas Hoyt. Born in England, November 11/1622, died July 7/1655. He married on June 12/1646, Susannah Joyce, a widow, who died July 4/1655. See subject 300 for issue and further particulars. 6. Ruth Hoyt. Born in England, January 2/1625, probably died young. Issue:- (by his second wife Susannah Smith) 7. Moses Hoyt. Born in America about 1637: his will was dated January 5/1711, proved March 14/1711-12. He lived in Westchester County, N.Y. He married Elizabeth --- and had eight children. 8. Joshua Hoyt. Born in America about 1641, died 1690. He married in 1663, Mary Bell, daughter of Francis and Rebecca Bell of Wethers- field and Stamford, and had eight children. 9. Samuel Hoyt. Born in America about 1643, died April 7/1720. He married, 1st, on November 16/1671, Hannah Holly, who died December 7/ 1710, daughter of John Holly. He married, 2nd, Rebecca Gold, who died December 8/1713: He married, 3rd, on September 20/1714, Mrs. Hannah Gold of Stamford, daughter of George Slason, and widow of a Mr. Gold. He had eight children by his first wife. 10. Benjamin Hoyt. Born at Windsor, Conn., February 2/1644, died January 26/1733. He lived in Stamford. He married, 1st, on January 5/1670, Hannah Weed, who died November 9/1711, daughter of Jonas Weed and had six children. He married, 2nd, Abigail ---, who died March 4/1729-30. 11. Mary Hoyt. She married about 1654, as his second wife, Thomas Lyon, born in England in 1621, died at Greenwich, Conn., in 1690, a Quaker. Thomas was a soldier in Oliver Cromwell's army, and was on guard at the banquetting house at Whitehall, London, on January 30/1648, where they witnessed the execution of Charles I. In the reaction which followed the regicide, they escaped (he and his two brothers), and took a ship which landed them at New Haven, Conn., in 1648. Thomas had married, 1st, in 1649, Martha Joanna Winthrop, born at Groton Manor, England, May 9/1630 died at Stamford before 1654, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Fones) Winthrop, see Lindsley Genealogy, subject 922 for further particulars, and for his ten children by both of his wives. 12. Sarah Hoyt. Born about 1648, died March 19/1712-13. She married Samuel Finch, who died at Stamford, April 23/1698, son of John and Hannah (Marsh) Finch, and had six children. 13. Miriam Hoyt. Born about 1650. She married Samuel Forman, born in England in 1637, died in April 1682, son of Robert and Johanna (---) Forman. (This is from the Forman Genealogy, by Anne S. Dandridge, Cleveland, Ohio, 1903.) They lived in Flushing, L.I. After Samuel's death, she married, about 1683, Richard Harcourt, born 1623, died 1696, who had married, 1st, in 1651, Elizabeth Potter, born 1635-6, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Anthony) Potter, see subject 306, but had no children by him. Issue:- 2/1. Mercy Forman. She married Benjamin Birdsall, whose will was dated 1719, son of Nathan and Temperance (Baldwin) Birdsall, who lived in Oyster Bay, L.I. in 1684-5. Issue:- (from Bunker, corrected by the Wright and Frost genealogies) 3/1. Elizabeth Birdsall, born 1683. She married a Townsend. 3/2. Susannah Birdsall, born 1685, died June 1725. She married, as his second wife, in 1715, John Underhill born May 1/1670, died May 21/1728, son of John and Mary (Prior) Underhill, who had Subject 600. He married, as her third husband, Rose Wright, born 1685, died December 13/1754, daughter of John and Mary (Townsend) Wright, see subject 616, page 4, and subject 618, page 3. Issue:- 4/1. Benjamin Birdsall, born June 10/1713: he married Martha Smith. 4/2. Sarah Birdsall, born September 4/1717, died May 18/1799, She married Wright Coles, born 1704, died February 23/1765, son of Nathaniel and Rose (Wright) Coles, see subject 618, page 3 for their children. 4/3. Martha Birdsall, born 1720. No data. 4/4. Jacob Birdsall, born June 3/1722. He married on June 6/1737, Sarah Weekes, daughter of Samuel and Anna (Carpenter) Weekes, see subject 304, page 2. 4/5. Daniel Birdsall, born June 1/1724, He married Mercy Town- send, born November 30/1730, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Cooper) Townsend, see subject 154, page 3. 3/4. Judith Birdsall, born 1688-9. She married Robert Townsend, her cousin, son of Daniel and Susannah (Forman) Townsend, see below, 3/5. Benjamin Birdsall, born March 15/1691, died November 7/1754 at Rye, N.Y. He married, 1st, Martha --- and had eight children. He married, 2nd, on February 21/1734, Elizabeth Hopkins, born 1717, daughter of Ichabod and Sarah (Coles) Hopkins, see subject 618, page 2. 3/6. Miriam Birdsall, born 1693. 3/7. John Birdsall, born 1696, died 1764. He married, 1st, on September 29/1744, Elizabeth Langdon, daughter of Thomas and Mary Langdon, and had six children: 2nd, E. Coe, widow of a Mr. Pierce, and had three children. 3/8. Zilpha Birdsall, born 1699, 3/9. Sarah Birdsall, born 1702. 3/10. Nathan Birdsall, born 1705. He married on April 12/1726, Jane Langdon, daughter of John Langdon of Hempstead, and soon after moved to Westchester County, N.Y, and in 1728 settled at Quaker Hill, Dutchess County, N.Y. Issue:- (an only child) 4/1, Amy Birdsall, born March 4/1727. She married Richard Washburn, born June 27/1730, died 1775, son of John and Hannah (Hallett) Washburn. 2/2. John Forman. No data, 2/3. Susannah Forman. She married Daniel Townsend, who died July 2/1702, son of John and Elizabeth (Coles) Montgomery Townsend, see subject 308 page 9 for their issue. Their son Robert married his cousin Judith Birdsall, see above. 2/4. Sarah Forman. She married in 1680, Daniel Harcourt, born 1658, son of her mother's second husband by the latter's first wife, namely, son of Richard and Elizabeth (Potter) Harcourt, see subject 306, page 2.
