The original text had generations indented in turn: here, generation numbers are added to each individual: the children of the title subject are "1/--". Subject 616. P1 (349) 2/2/51 THOMAS TOWNSEND. The following is from the "Townsend-Townshend Genealogy" by Margaret Townsend, New York, 1909; from Bunker's Long Island Genealogies: from "The Genealogy of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower"; from the "Memorial of Samuel Hicks Seaman; from "The Underhill Genealogy", by Josephine C. Frost: from "Colonial Families", and "Colonial Revolutionary Families", by The American Historical Society of New York. The Margaret Townsend Genealogy gives much of interest not copied out below: she doubts that Henry and Richard Townsend, who I give as sons of Thomas, were his sons: she thinks they may have been either brothers of this Thomas, or independent Townsend emigrants. William S. Pelletreau's "American Families of Historic Lineages", differs from Margaret Townsend, and I have adopted Pelletreau's Genealogy as the more correct. The family name of Townsend is of ancient origin, dating back to Anglo-Saxon days, and derives its meaning from the place of residence of the family: Townsend was originally "at the town's end". The H in the name Townshend is an early intrusion which was later dropped. The Townsend families of England and America are of mixed Saxon and Norman origin, and of great antiquity in Norfolk County, England. Lodovic de Townshend, a Norman nobleman, married Elizabeth de Huntsville (Hauteville). The Hauteville family possessed large estates, all of which came into possession of the Townsends. A William Townsend held considerable lands in Norfolk in the reign of King John, about 1200 A.D. In 12l7-l272, there was a Thomas Townsend at West Huling, and in 1304 his son John died, There is a tradition that Thomas Townsend was a cousin of Governor Winthrop, came from London, and settled in Lynn, Mass., about 1635. William S. Pelletreau says he was baptized at Bracon Ash, Norfolk County, England, on January 8/1594-5, and died at Lynn, Mass,, on December 22/1677. Until his majority, he lived at Gedding, Suffolk County, England, when he went to London and married, name of wife unknown. His wife died after giving birth to three sons, and with these three sons, he embarked for the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637, and was made a freeman of Lynn on March 14/1639. He became a citizen of wealth and influence, and married, 2nd, Mary Newgate (also spelled Neazati), probably a sister of John Newgate, a merchant of Boston, and a Selectman there. At this time he was a man of about 45 years of age, and his sons were men of full age. They were evidently dissatisfied with the Puritan spirit of the Colony, as his sons left him and emigrated through Rhode Island into the Connecticut Colony, which at that tine was included in the east part of Long Island. By his second marriage he had at least five children who remained loyal to him, and their descendants are found in eastern Massachusetts, whose names are not given below. Thomas was a farmer, Bunker gives his children as below, by his first wife, but Margaret Townsend and others, say there is much against this assumption. The time of his children coming to America cannot be fixed: it was several years before 1645 as in that year, Governor Kieft of the New Netherlands, gave them a patent for the town of Flushing, L.I., along with others. Issue:- (by his first wife, name unknown) 1. John Townsend, Born at Norwich, Norfolk County, England, died at Oyster Bay, L.I., 1668-9. See subject 308 for issue and further particulars. Subject 616. P2 (350) 2. Thomas Townsend. Said to have died in England. Henry Townsend. Born at Norwich, Norfolk County, England, died on February 6 or March 30/1695. There is an interesting account of his life in the "MacDonough-Hackstaff Ancestry".
