The following is from "Ten Generations of the Briggs Family" by Pearl Leone Heck (l932), on file at the New England Historical & Genealogical Society of Boston. John Cooke was born 1631 in England, and died 1691 at Portsmouth, Rhode Island. As far as is known he was no relation of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower (subject 686). He was a freeman in 1655. He and Daniel Wilcox were given power to run a ferry at Pocasset on June 3/1668. He was Deputy Governor in 1670. He married Mary Borden, daughter of Richard and Joan (Fowle) Borden, subject 646. His Will dated May 25/1691, appointed as Executors son Joseph and Overseers George Sisson and Isaac Lawton. John speaks of himself as aged and says considering the sore visitation of small-pox wherewith many are now visited and many have been taken away, &c". He left his son John 150 acres at Punketest with all his stuff &c and four acres at Sapowet in Little Compton, half the upland there and eight head of cattle, and feather bed at Punketest where he liveth, and 20 sheep, reserving the right to son Joseph of getting hay at Punketest for 15 head of cattle. To son Joseph, housing and land where I dwell at Portsmouth and four acres marsh land at Sapowet and half upland there, but if Joseph died without heirs, then to go to son Thomas, son Joseph to pay his sisters. To Mary Manchester, wife of William Manchester, Elizabeth Briggs, wife of William Briggs, Sarah Waite, wife of Thomas Waite, and to his sisters Hannah Wilcox, wife of Daniel, and Martha Cory wife of William, each œ10. To Deborah Almy, wife of William Almy, one shilling. To Amey Clayton, wife of David œ10 and to each other sisters, being six of them, a cow. Issue:- 1. Mary Cooke. Born l650. She married William Manchester, born 1645, died 1718. See subject 320 for issue and further particulars. 2. Elizabeth Cooke. married William Briggs, born 1650, died May 1716. Elizabeth was born 1653, died August 1716. See subject 346 for issue and further particulars. 3. John Cooke. Married Ruth Shaw of Punketest. 4. Sarah Cooke. Died 1733. Married Thomas Waite, died 1733: they lived at Tiverton and had children Mary, Thomas and Benjamin. 5. Hannah Cooke. Married, 1st, Daniel Wilcox and had five children. 2nd, Enoch Briggs, brother of William (subject 692) and had three children by him. 6. Joseph Cooke. Married in 1692, Susannah Briggs, daughter of John and Hannah (Fisher) Briggs. They had had five children. 7. Martha Cooke. Died 1704. Married William Cory, son of William and Mary (Earle) Cory who died 1704. They had seven children, sea subject 332. 8. Deborah Cooke. Married William Almy, born 1655, died 1747, son of Christopher and Elizabeth (Cornell) Almy of Rhode Island. 9 children. 9. Thomas Cooke. Married Mary Cory, died 1726, sister of William, his elder sister Martha's husband. They had six children. 10. Amey Cooke. Married David Clayton.
