The following is from the same sources as quoted under subject 2128, and from "Moore and Allied Families", by L. Effingham De Forest, New York, 1938, a long interesting account. Robert Hicks was baptized in England about 1575, and died at Plymouth, Mass., on March 24/1647, son of James and Phebe (Allyn) Hicks, see subject 2128. He is said to have been of a Gloucestershire family, and that he had been a leather dresser at Bermondsey, a suburb of London, which at that time was the seat of the leather tanning industry. He lived at Southwark, London. He came to America on the ship "Fortune", which followed the Mayflower, and arrived at Plymouth on November 11/1621, with a party of Puritans. His second wife Margaret Winslow, followed in the ship "Ann", arriving at Plymouth in June 1922 (1622!). He married, 1st, in England, in 1596, Elizabeth Morgan, who died about 1607, daughter of John Morgan of Southwark, a leather dealer. He married, 2nd, at London, England, in 1610, Margaret Winslow, whose will was dated July 8/1665, proved March 6/1666. Issue:- (by his first wife Elizabeth Morgan) 1. Elizabeth Hicks. She married James Dickenson. After Elisabeth's death, James married, 2nd, Elizabeth Howland, widow of Elizabeth Hicks' younger brother Ephraim, see next page. 2. Thomas Hicks. Baptized at Bermondsey, February 19/1603, buried 1604. 3. John Hicks. Baptized at London, England, October 12/1605, died in Long Island, N.Y., in May 1672. He emigrated to America about 1635. He married, 1st, in London, about 1634, Horod Long, from whom he was separated in 1639. He married, 2nd, (according to the Cornell Genea- logy by the Rev. John Cornell, New York, 1902), Florence Carman, who died in 1661, widow of John Carman, see subject 536. He married, 3rd, Rachel ---, widow of Josias Starr. See subject 532 for issue and further particulars. 4. Sarah Hicks. Baptized at Bermondsey, London, October 5/1607. 5. Stephen Hicks. Born in England, Bunker says he followed his elder brother John to Long Island, acquired a tract of land at Little Neck, built a handsome house, and lived to an advanced age. He had no sons. His will, dated June 8/1688, proved August 28/1688, left all his estate to his wife Anne ---. Issue:- (by his second wife Margaret Winslow) 6. Samuel Hicks. Josephine C. Frost says he came to New England with his mother in 1623, and in 1642-3 settled at Eastham, Mass., where he was a constable in 1646, represented the town in the Colony Court in 1647-1649. He returned to Plymouth in 1652. He was at Barnstable Mass., on October 3/1662, and at Dartmouth in 1667. He married on September 11/1645, Lydia Doane, born probably before her parents left England, daughter of Deacon John Doane of Plymouth and his wife Abigail ---. He had many lawsuits over his brother Ephraim's estate and his father's estate, see the long account in Moore Genealogy quoted above. Issue:- 2/1. Samuel Hicks, born about 1646, (Moore says 1651). He married on September 27/1665, Hannah Evans. 2/2. Ephraim Hicks, born about 1648. 2/3. Thomas Hicks, born about 1650, died in 1698. His estate was valued at œ250, consisting of lands and live-stock. He was a carpenter and in 1673 lived at Portsmouth, R.I. He married Mary AIbro or Alborough, who died in 1710, daughter of John Albro, Subject 1054. P2. (born in England in 1617, came to Boston on the ship "Frances & Ann" and settled at Portsmouth) and Dorothy Potter (born in England in 1617, died February 10/1696) widow of Nathaniel Potter who died in 1644, see subject 700 for their children). Issue:- 3/1. Sarah Hicks, born about 1670, died June 16/1694. She married on May 1/1693, John Anthony born June 28/1671, died 1699, son of John and Frances (Wodell) Anthony: no children. 3/2. Thomas Hicks, died November 20/1759. He married, 1st, on September 22/1704, Ann Clarke, daughter of Weston and Mary (Easton) Clarke, and had eight children. He married, 2nd, Elizabeth ---, but had no children by her. In his will, Thomas left Elizabeth "nothing but what she could get by law as she has left me and eloped with another man". Thomas inherited from his father, the Tiverton, R.I. house and lands. 3/3. Samuel Hicks, died 1742. He inherited from his father, the 70th plot in the first division of Portsmouth. He married on January 1/1702, Susanna Anthony, born 1674, died 1756, daughter of Abraham and Alice (Wodell) Anthony, and had seven children. 3/4. Ephraim Hicks. His father left him 190 acres of land, 3/5. Susannah Hicks, Her father left her œ20 to be paid by her brother Thomas, 3/6. Abigail Hicks. Her father left her œ20 to be paid by Thomas. 3/7. Elizabeth Hicks, Her father left her œ20 to be paid by her brother Ephraim. 2/4. Dorcas Hicks, born February 14/1652 at Plymouth, Mass, 2/5. Margaret Hicks, born March 9/1654. 2/6. Sarah Hicks. She married on June 3/1672, Joseph Churchill, born at Plymouth in 1647, son of John and Hannah (Pontus) Churchill and had five children. 2/7. Daniel Hicks. He married Elizabeth Hanmore. 7.Ephraim hicks. Probably born between 1620-1625, died a violent death September 12/1649-50. He married on September 13/1649, Elizabeth Howland, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland of the Mayflower, see subject 1380, page 1. After Ephraim's early death, Elizabeth married, 2nd, on July 10/1651, James Dickenson, who had married, 1st, Ephraim's elder sister Elizabeth, see page 1. 8. Lydia Hicks. Josephine C. Frost says she was the daughter of the first wife. She married at Plymouth, Mass., Edward Bangs, born in England about 1592, died at Eastham, Mass., in 1679-80, aged 86 years. He came to Plymouth in the ship "Anne", in July 1623, one of the founders of Plymouth Colony. He removed to Eastham and was deputy to the General Court in 1647, 1650 and 1663. Issue: - 2/1. Rebecca Bangs. She married on October 28/1654, Jonathan Sparrow, born at Plymouth in 1633, died 1707, son of Richard and Pandora Sparrow of Plymouth, and had Rebecca, John, Priscilla, Lydia, Elizabeth and Jonathan. After Rebecca's death, he married, 2nd, Hannah (Prince) Mayo and had two children. He married, 3rd, Sarah Lewis, widow of John Cobb. 9. Phebe Hicks. She married, perhaps, in 1635, George Watson, and had one son John. 10. Elizabeth Hicks. No data. 11. Daniel Hicks. No data.
