Note: The following is a section of a family history compiled by Herbert Armstrong Poole between 1905 & 1960, transcribed by AAA Maitland 1998. Subject numbers are HAP's originals. HAP's page divisions are shown: after subject page numbers are complete document page numbers in brackets and issue dates. The original text had generations indented in turn: here, generation numbers are added to each individual: the children of the title subject are "1/--". Subject 1072. P1. (404) 4/26/51 JOHN CARMAN. The following is from "The Genealogy of John Carman", by Henry Alanson Tredwell, Brooklyn, 1946: from Bunker`s Long Island Genealogies: from "Genealogies of Long Island Families", by Charles J. Werner 1919: and from "Robert Coe, Puritan", by J. Gardner Bartlett, Boston, 1911. John Carman was born in 1606 at Hemel-Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England, and died in 1653 at Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y. No will of his has ever been found. He came to America on the ship "Lion", Captain William Pierce, and arrived at Roxbury, Mass., on November 4/1631. Another genealogy says he came on the ship "Plough". On the ship "Lion", came John Eliot, the wife of Governor Winthrop, the Reverend Robert Fordham, and many Puritans, most of whom came from the Parish of Nazing, a small rural village in The County of Essex, on the river Lea, 20 miles north east of London, which was the home of so many Roxbury settlers, The name Carman is derived from the word Kar, meaning a castle or stronghold or fortified place: Carman means the Lord of the Stronghold. According to Doomsday Records, John Carman`s ancestors were:- Thomas Carman of Herts., born 1517, a martyr burnt at the stake for religious reasons, at Norwich, on May 19/1558, who had issue:- 1. Thomas Carman, born 1539, died 1558, burnt at the stake with his father. 2. John Carman, born 1541, who had a son born 1563, who in turn had a son John, born 1584, who by his wife Abigail had a son John, born 1606, the man of this subject 1072. 3. Henry Carman, born 1547, 4. Several daughters, names unknown. John Carman lived at Roxbury, Mass., for two years, and became a freeman in 1633. He went to Lynn, Mass., in 1636: to Sandwich, Mass., in 1637 where he was a ship master: to Wallingford, Conn., and thence in 1641 to Stamford, Conn. In 1643, in company with John Seaman, he went to Long Island and settled at Hempstead. He, and or John seaman, probably the latter, bought from the Rockawey Indians and the Massapequa Indians, 120,000 acres of land, extending from the ocean to the Sound. See subject 264, page 1 for further details of this purchase, in which the area of the land is stated to be only 12,000 acres. John Carman married in England in 1629-30 Florence ---. who died in 1661, date of birth and parents names unknown. Many genealogies say she was Florence Fordham, daughter of the Reverend Robert Fordham, but Tredwell's Genealogy says this is a mistake and gives his reasons. The Miner Genealogy confirms Tredwell with the following account of Robert Fordham, whose children were all born after 1633. Robert Fordham was born at Sacomb, Herefordshire, in 1603, received his degree at Cambridge University in 1625 and 1629, came to America in 1640, settled first at Stamford, Conn., then moved to Hempstead, L.I., and served there and at Southampton as minister of the Church from 1643 until his death in 1674. The Jones Genealogy says Florence (---) Carman married, 2nd, as his second wife, John Hicks, born in London about 1606, died on Long Island in May 1672, but had no children by him, see subject 532. Issue:- 1. John Carman. Born in England, died young. 2. John Carman. Born at Roxbury, Mass., July 8/1632-3, died in 1684 at Hempstead, L.l. He married about 1655, Hannah ---. His wife was not Hannah Seaman, daughter of Captain John Seaman as stated in the Seaman and other genealogies. His wife Hannah -- was born about 1636 and died between 1674 and 1684, probably of a Hempstead family. See subject l072. P2. (405) 4/26/51 subject 532 for issue and further particulars. 3. Abigail Carman. Born at Roxbury, Mass., in May 1635. she married before 1660, 1st, Benjamin Coe, baptized at Boxford, Suffolk County, England, October 18/1628, who came with his father Robert to New England in 1634. In 1656 he founded Jamaica, L.I., and was a farmer and a miller. After Benjamin's death, Abigail married, 2nd, as his second wife, Daniel Whitehead of Jamaica, who had married, 1st, Abigail Stevenson. Issue:- (by her first husband Benjamin Coe) 2/1. Benjamin Coe, born 1660. 2/2. Joseph Coe, born 1665. 2/3. John Coe, born 1670. In 1698 he bought 140 acres of land in Sussex County, Delaware. He married on June 30/1697, Elizabeth Roads or Rhodes. 2/4. William Coe, born 1675. In 1705 he probably moved to Lewes, Sussex County Delaware. 2/5. Several daughters, of which no record has been found. 4. Caleb Carman. Born at Wallingford, Conn., August 6/1651, died between 1640 and 1645. 5. Caleb Carman. Born at Hempstead, L.I., January 9/1644-5, died at Cape May, N.J., in 1695. He was supposed to be the first white child born in Hempstead, and blind from birth: the former claim is questionable: as to his blindness, see Tredwell's genealogy: he was provided for in his father's will so perhaps may have been blind or perhaps a mute. He lived in Jamaica, L.I., but in 1680 emigrated to Cape May, N.J. He married Elizabeth ---, last name unknown. Issue:- 2/1. John Carman, born 1662. 2/2. Joshua Carman, born 1664. 2/3. Caleb Carman, born 1675. 2/4. James Carman, born 1677, died October 29/1756 at Cranbury, N.J. He was a minister of the Baptist Church. He married, 1st, Margaret Duwys: 2nd, Sarah Frazier. Issue:- (by his first wife Margaret Duwys) 3/1. Caleb Carman, born June 26/1706 at Middleton, N.J., died July 20/1807 at Bordentowm, N.J., 99 years of age. He married Elizabeth Wood, daughter of Kiah Wood. See Albert Prudden Carman's genealogy of the Carman Family for his children and descendants. 6. Joshua Carman. Born 1646, died probably before 1698 as he was not mentioned in the Hempstead Census of 1698. He may have been blind or a deaf mute as he was provided for in his father's Will. He probably never married.
