The following is from "The Howlands in America", by William Howland, Detroit, 1939: and from "The Genealogical & Biographical History of Arthur, Henry and John Howland", by Franklyn Howland, 1885. All the Howlands in America can trace their ancestral lineages to Henry Howland of Fen Stanton, Huntingdonshire, England. No further information about Henry Howland is given in the above genealogies, His wife's name is not known. Issue: - 1. Arthur Howland. Born in England, date unknown, died at Marshfield, Mass., October 30/1675. He cane to America with his brother Henry, probably in 1623-4, following his brother John who had come on the Mayflower in 1620. He lived in Plymouth Mass., for a few years, and then moved to Marshfield, where, on July 2/1638, 300 acres were granted to Myles Standish and John Alden, who sold it on March 14/1645 to Edmund Freeman for œ71.10.0. It then passed to William Partridge, who conveyed it in 1647 to Arthur Howland for œ21: of this sun œ13 was paid in money and the balance in corn and cattle. Arthur lived and died on his estate, as did five later generations, all buried there. He was Quaker and was fined many times for permitting Quaker meetings at his house. He married a widow named Margaret Reed, buried there June 22/1683. Issue :- 2/1. Arthur Howland. He married Elizabeth Prence, daughter of Governor Thomas Prence of Plymouth, Mass. 2/2. Deborah Howland. She married on January 1/1648, John Smith of Plymouth. 2/3. Mary Howland. She married, 1st, on June 6/1653, Timothy Williams: 2nd, on January 22/1679, Robert Sanford. 2/4. Martha Howland. She married on January 15/1659, John Damon of Scituate, Mass. 2/5. Elizabeth Howland. She married John Low. 2. Henry Howland. Born in England, came with his brother Arthur to Plymouth in 1623-4. He married Mary --- (some say a Newland), who died June 17/1674. Henry died January 17/1671. See subject 690 for issue and further particulars. 3. John Howland. Born in England. He came to America on the "Mayflower" when he was 28 years old, see subject 666 for a short account of the voyage and the passengers. He married, about 1623, Elizabeth Tilley, born 1607, daughter of John Tilley who came on the Mayflower with his wife: both Tilleys died the first winter after arriving, leaving Elizabeth an orphan. Elizabeth passed the closing years of her life with her daughter Lydia Brown in Swansea, R.I., and died there on December 22/1687. Issue:- 2/1. Desire Howland, died October 13/1683. She married in 1643, Captain John Gorham, born 1621, died 1675-6. They had eleven children. 2/2. John Howland, born February 24/1627 at Plymouth. He married on October 26/1651, Mary Lee, daughter of Robert Lee of Barnstable, Mass., and had ten children. 2/3. Jabez Howland, born probably in 1628 at Plymouth. He married Bethiah Thatcher and had eleven children. 2/4. Hope Howland, born August 30/1629, died January 8/1684. She married in 1646, John Chipman, who came from England in 1630 from Barnstable, England. They had eleven children.
