(421) HP 26/4/1951 EDMUND INGALLS The following is from the "Ingalls Genealogy" by Dr Charles Burleigh of Malden (1903): also from the "Ingalls Genealogy", by Dr Walter Renton Ingalls (1933), both on file at The New England Historical & Genealogical Society of Boston. Edmund Ingalls was the son of Robert and grandson of Henry Ingalls, and was born at Skirbeck, Lincolnshire, England, about 1598 and came to Salem in Governor Endicott's Company in 1628. With brothers Francis and four others, he commenced the settlement of Lynn, Mass, in 1629. He we a man of good character and although he was fined on April 20/1646 for bringing home sticks in both arms on the Sabbath Day, he was one of the prominent citizens and held many important offices in the town. In March 1648, while travelling to Boston on horseback, he was drowned in the Sangus River owing to a defective bridge: his heirs recovered damages from the town. His estate was inventoried at œ135. A copy of his Will is given in the above quoted genealogy. Issue:- 1. Robert Ingalls. Born 1621 at Skirbeck, England, died January 3/1698. He married in 1646 at Lynn, Sarah Harker, who died April 8/1696. See subject 704 for issue and further particulars. 2. Elizabeth Ingalls Born 1622, died June 9/1676. She married the Reverend Francis Dane. Their daughter Elizabeth was charged with witchcraft but not convicted. Dane, throughout his life, during the witch hunts, conducted himself with sanity and suavity and undoubtedly saved a good many, including his daughters. 3. Faith Ingalls. Born at Skirbeck in 1623. She married Andrew Allan, who died of smallpox in the epidemic at 1690, and moved with him and their family to Andover, Mass, and lived there during the remainder of her life. They had a daughter Martha, who married Thomas Currier, born 1626, a Welshman of Billerica, on May 6/1674. He removed to Colchester in 1715 and died there March 10/1735, at the remarkable age of 109 years. Martha was charged with witchcraft in 1692, and was sentenced by the Court of Salem on August 5/1692, and executed by hanging on August 15/1692 at Salem. She was the only one of the victims of this popular delusion who from first to last made no admission or confession. In her trial she conducted herself strong- mindedly and throughout held firmly, denying all charges, and in the end, unshaken in nerves, met death with heroic courage. Her case was singularly distressing, for under the terror four of her own children were induced to testify against her. Her little eight year old daughter said that when she was six years old, her mother made her write in the Devil's Book. Cotton Mather said "This rampant hag, Martha Currier, was the person whom The Confession of the Witches and of her own children among the rest, agreed that the Devil had promised her she should be Queen of Hell", Mary, another daughter of Faith Ingalls was murdered by the Indians on August 5/1695. 4. John Ingalls, Born at Skirbeck in 1625, died December 31/1721. He married on May 26/1667, Elizabeth Barrett of Salem, and moved to Tiverton and Reheboth. They had five children. 5. Sarah Ingalls:. Born at Skirbeck in 1626. She married in 1648, William Dittner. 6. Henry Ingalls. Born in Skirbeck 1627, died February 8/1718-9. He married on July 6/1653, Mary Osgood, born 1632 in England, died December 16/1685. He married, 2nd, on August 1/1688, Sarah (Farnum) Abbott, born 1638, died March 12/1728 aged 90 years. Henry owned land at Ipswich, sold it in 1652 and was one of the first settlers at Andover, Mass, buying land from The Indians and paying for it with clothing and trinkets. Subject 1408 P2 (422) 7.
