(426) RICHARD KETTEL The following is from Charlestown Genealogies, by Thomas Bellows Wyman, 1879 Vol 2, p 574: and from the Thayer Genealogy, by Ruth Thayer Ravenscroft, Colorado Springs, 1943-7. Richard Kettell was born in 1609, and died June 28/1680. Later descendants changed the spelling of the name to Kettle. It is not known where he came from but he was an early settler of Charlestown, Mass., he and his wife being admitted to the church on May 30/1633. He was a Cooper and was styled a Sergeant. He was Juryman in 1660, Sealer of Weights and Measures in 1663. Henry D. Thayer was a descendant of this Richard Kettell. He married Esther or Hester Ward, who died July 5/1679. He owned much land, about 33 acres, and left an estate valued at œ299. His will left his house and half an acre of land to his daughter Hannah. Issue: (all born in Charlestown) 1. Hannah Kettell. Baptized August 29/1637. She married on January 21/1656, John Call. See subject 712 for issue and further particulars. 2. John Kettel Baptized December 6/1639. He was a Cooper and a Constable in 1667: a culler and packer of fish in 1675. He married, 1st, Sarah Goodnow, who was captured in 1676 by the Indians, and carried away from Lancaster. He married, 2nd, Elizabeth Ward. He had four children. 3. Joseph Kettell. Born February 15/1640, died April 5/1711. He married, 1st, on July 5/1665, Hannah Frothingham, born 1643, died September 15/1693, and had thirteen children, few of whom lived to maturity. He married, 2nd, on March 15/1694, Dorothy (--) Hett, born 1650, died December 11/1710, widow of Thomas Hett. 4. Samuel Kettell. Born November 19/1642, died December 20/1694. He was a potter and a sergeant in 1688. He married, 1st, on.July 11/1665, Mercy Hayden, born 1647, died October 30/1692, daughter of James and Elizabeth Hayden, and had two children by her. He married, 2nd, on May 3/1694, Mary (Hett) Frothingham, born 1648, died June 7/1710, widow of Nathaniel Frothingham. No children by her. 5. Nathaniel Kettell. Born October 11/1644, died there 1735. He was a shipwright and a constable in Charlestown in 1691. He married, 1st, on June 13/1669-70, Hannah Eville, who died at Charlestown, November 19/1670, and had one child by her. He married, 2nd, on October 30/1673, Hannah Kidder, daughter of James Kidder, and had ten children by her. 6. Jonathan Kettell. Born 1646, died December 18/1720. He was a tailor in Boston. He married on March 30/1676, Abigail Converse, born 1657, died January 24/1690, and had six children.
