The following is from the "Hicks Genealogy", by Benjamin Doughty Hicks, 8 volumes manuscript, the only copy extant being at the Long Island Historical Society, Brooklyn: from "One Branch of the Hicks Family", by J.O. The ancestry of James Hicks is given as follows:- Sir Ellis Hicks. Was knighted by Edward, the Black Prince, on the field of Poitiers, on September 9/1356, for bravery in capturing a set of colors from the French: he had a son:- John Hicks. Died in 1492, of Tortworth, Gloucestershire, England, and had a son:- Thomas Hicks. Died 1565. He married Margaret Atwood and had a son:- Baptist Hicks. Born 1526. He married Mary Everard, daughter of James Everard, and had a son:- James Hicks. Born 1550, the man of this subject. James Hicks married Phoebe Allyn, daughter of the Reverend Ephraim Allyn. Issue:- 1. Robert Hicks. Baptized in England about 1575, and died at Plymouth, Mass., on March 24/1647. He lived at Southwark, London, and came to America on the ship "Fortune", which followed the "Mayflower", and arrived at Plymouth on November 11/1621, with a party of Puritans. See subject 1064 for issue and further particulars. 2. Thomas Hicks. Born in England, date unknown. He followed his brother Robert from Southwark, London, to America. He settled at Scituate, Mass., where he took the oath of fidelity in 1644. He died there in 1653, his will being dated January 10/1653, in which he named his wife Margaret (---) as executrix. His estate was inventoried at œ18.2.0. Issue: - 2/1. Zechariah Hicks, born in England in 1628, died at Cambridge, Mass., August 5/1702. He married in America, on October 28/1652, Elizabeth Sills, born 1636, died September 12/1730, daughter of John Sills. Issue:- 3/1. Elizabeth Hicks, born April 28/1654. 3/2 .Zechariah Hicks, born September 28/1657. 3/3. John Hicks, born in April 1660, died soon. 3/4. Joseph Hicks, born in 1662. 3/5. Thomas Hicks, born July 3/1664. 3/6. Hannah Hicks, born March 4/1666. 3/7. John Hicks, born --. 2/2. Daniel Hicks, born in England. He took the oath of fidelity in Scituate in 1657, and moved to Swanzey, Mass., where he died before 1694. He married in September 1659, Rebecca Hammer, daughter of John Hammer of Scituate. This name is sometimes spelled Hanmer. Issue:- (see next page) Subject 2128 P2 (436) Issue:- 3/1. Daniel Hicks, born 1660, died March 21/1746. He married on February 11/1695, Sarah Edmonds, born February 17/1678, daughter of Andrew and Mary (Hearnden) Edmonds of Providence, R.I, Andrew ran the ferry between Providence and Reheboth, Issue:- 4/1. Sarah Hicks, born May 30/1700. She married on August 5/1736, William Carter. 4/2. Joseph Hicks, born October 8/1702. He married on April 5/1721, Patience Wheaton. 4/3. Hannah Hicks, born April 12/1705. 4/4. Isaac Hicks, born May 11/1708. He married on June 7/1739, Mary Luther. 5/5. Benjamin Hicks, born December 1/1711. He married on April 3/1740; Martha Johnson. Issue:- 5/1. Robert Hicks, born February 17/1741. 5/2. Daniel Hicks, born June 17/1743. 5/3. David Hicks, born March 1/1745, died July 5/1816, buried in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, with his wife. The name of his first wife is unknown: he married, 2nd, on June 12/1777, Mary Gibbs: he married, 2rd, on August 28/1783, Jane Hellen, born November 25/1755, died December 5/1817, daughter of Ratcliffe and Parthenia (Palmer) Hellen. Ratcliffe Hellen came from the north of Ireland and settled at Taunton, Mass. He was lost at sea with a son while on a visit to Ireland. Issue:- (by his first wife, name unknown) 6/1. David Hicks, born ---, died at Providence in 1804. He married Rosamond Simmons, daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Young) Simmons. After David's death, she married on November 2/1806, John Reynolds. Issue:- 7/1. Eliza Young Hicks, born August 23/1802. She married Darius Sessions. 6/2. Elisha Hicks, He married on October 27/1795, Ruth Carey, born 1769, died September 10/1836. 5 children. Issue:- (by his second wife Mary Gibbs) 6/3. Henry Hicks, died unmarried. 6/4. Mary Hicks. She married on January 16/1803, Thos Walton. Issue:- (by his third wife Jane Hellen) 6/5. Ratcliffe Hicks, born June 14/1774, died October 26/1846. He married on November 16/1807, Elizabeth Randall, born 1788, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Smithen) Randall. In 1824, Captain Hicks, a mariner, lived on Ship St., Providence, R.I. He was a high degree Mason. He made many voyages all over the world: he was captured by bandits in Mexico and his ship was captured in Peru. The above quoted genealogy gives a most interesting account of his voyages. Issue:- 7/1. Alfred Hicks. He married on September 30/1835, Eliza C. Kendall and had one son and one daughter. 7/2. Charles Richard Hicks, born July 1/1812, died June 29/1878. He married on October 16/1842, Maria A. Subject 2128 P3 4/22/53 Stearns, daughter of Elisha and Celinda (Baker) Stearns of Tolland County, Conn. Issue:- 8/1. Ratcliffe Hicks, born in Tolland County, Ct October 3/1843. He married on December 17/1879, Lizzie C. Canfield died at Paris, France, June 7/1889, buried in La Pecq Cemetery, St. Germain, daughter of Jared H. and Mary C. (Andrews) Canfield and widow of Wilbur F. Parker. Ratcliffe owned the Canfield. Rubber Co. of Bridgeport, Conn. Issues- 9/1. Elizabeth Hicks, born February 19/1884. 8/2. Richard Stearns Hicks. He married Katherine Ives, daughter of George M. Ives of Stafford Springs, Conn. Two daughters. 8/3. Emma Maria Hicks. 8/4. Minnie Helen Hicks. 7/3. Frederick Hicks. He married a Miss Young. No children 7/4. Elizabeth W. Hicks. She married on April 22/1833, William H. Harding. 7/5. Horatio R. Hicks, born August 10/1823, D July 6/1824. 7/6. Horatio R. Hicks, born January 20/1827, d Jan 1/1849. 3/2. Ephraim Hicks. He went to Reheboth and may have married, 2nd, on September 20/1712, Hannah Wells. Issue:- (by his first wife, name unknown) 4/1. Ephraim Hicks. He married on February 10/1708, Sarah Kingsley who died in October 1727. Four children. 4/2. John Hicks. He married on September 16/1714, Priscilla Wheaton and had three children. 4/3. Samuel Hicks, died 1730. He married on September 3/1713, Mary Garnzey and had five children, 4/4. James Hicks, died 1730. He married on October 22/1713, Mary Wells and had five children. After James' death, Mary married, 2nd, an Eddy. 3/3. Thomas Hicks. Lived in Swanzey, Mass. His wife was Abigail -- and he had five or six children.
