The following is from "The Pedigree of Richard Borden.",~by Thomas Allen Glann (1901), on file the New England Historical Genealogical Society of Boston. Matthew Borden was born in the Parish of Hedcorn, Kent, England, and died there about 1620. He married Joan --. He was a Churchwarden of Hedcorn in 1598. His Will, dated September 25/1620, left to his wife Joane, beds, also œ8 yearly, out of my farm called Sims Hamdens, Parish of Smarden, Kent, until my son John attains 21 years of age: also rent of my houses in Hedcorn: also of my farm Grinnett in Hedcorn &c: to my daughter Amye œ60 at her age of 20: to my daughter Mary, wife of John Rowe, œ16: to my son Richard, my two houses and lands: to my son William œ40 and a house and land at Smarden Issue:- 1. Mary Borden Married on May 4/1620, John Roe (Rowe). 2 Joan Borden Baptized April 29/1593, buried June 11/1593. 3. John Borden. Baptized April 28/1594, died an infant. 4. Richard Borden. Baptized February 22/1595. He married on September 2/1625, Joan Fowle. He removed to New England and settled at Portsmouth, RI, where he died 1637-8. See subject 1380/90 for issue and further particulars. 5. William Borden. Baptized June 1/1600. 6. Amie Borden. Baptized April 26/1603. 7. Edward Borden. Baptized April 14/1605. 8. John Borden. Baptized February 22/1606-7. He went to New England in the ship "Elizabeth & Ann" in 1635. His wife Joan was then 25 years old and his son Matthew was 8 years old, and his daughter Elizabeth was 5 years old. Note. The Genealogy of Richard & Joan Fowler Borden published by Hattie Borden Weld, Los Angeles (July 1/1899), states that this man had two sons, Richard, born 1601 in England, who married Joan Fowler, born 1604, and John, who also married a Welsh girl named Joan -, but this is wrong, for their father was not baptized until 1606-7.
